Signs You Need Switchboard Upgrades

Boards give you warning before they give up. The signals are small and easy to explain away, which is why so many get ignored until something stops working.

  • Your board still takes rewireable ceramic fuses rather than circuit breakers
  • Nothing on the board is labelled, so finding the right circuit means switching things off and walking the house
  • There is no safety switch (RCD), so a fault has nothing to cut the power in time
  • You have added a kitchen, a studio or a charger since the board went in, and nothing was ever resized
  • One breaker lets go whenever two big appliances run together, then holds fine once one is off
  • Anything warm, buzzing or scorched at the board is an emergency electrician call, not a booking

Inside a Typical Switchboard Upgrade Job

An upgrade is a swap of the board, plus everything that makes the new board honest: the circuits behind it get identified, tested and labelled. Here is what we actually do while the power is off.

Circuit Identification First

Before anything is disconnected, we work out what each existing fuse really feeds, and write it down. Everything after this step depends on getting that right.

A New Board With RCBOs

Each circuit gets its own breaker and safety switch in one. A fault in the laundry then drops the laundry, instead of dropping the whole house at once.

Clipsal and Hager Switchgear

Name-brand gear goes in, not cheap imports. The parts that have to trip cleanly for the next thirty years are not the parts to go cheap on.

Labelling That Outlasts You

Every circuit gets named on the door in plain words. The next person standing there is not guessing between bedroom two and the shed.

Whatever the Old Board Was Hiding

Old boards keep secrets: shared neutrals, undersized mains, a splice left by a long-gone renovation. We show you what is there before we price the fix.

Switchboard Upgrades Pricing: What Moves the Quote

We don't charge by the hour, so the quote is worked out from what the board and the circuits behind it actually need. These are the things that move it.

  • How many circuits the house really has, which the old board's door will happily lie about
  • Whether the existing mains and main switch can carry a modern board, or need a Level 2 electrician first
  • What turns up once the board is off the wall: shared neutrals, perished insulation, old splices
  • How much room there is to work in, and whether the board has to grow past its current enclosure
  • Whether you want spare ways left for an EV charger or a future circuit, or only what you need today

Whatever those add up to, you see the price in writing first, and it holds from there. Take $50 off your first service on top.

The Malabar Angle on Switchboard Upgrades

Malabar's housing arrived in waves, and the switchboards keep the record.

Plenty of the original interwar and post-war cottages here still run the ceramic-fuse board they were built with. Dacre Street has its share of them.

The fuses are not the interesting part. What matters is everything that got added afterwards.

A cottage that started with a handful of circuits has since taken on a rebuilt kitchen, a second bathroom, a room out the back. All of it went onto the same board, and the label on the door stopped matching the house a long time ago.

So the first job here is not the board. It is working out what is actually on it.

The Rules That Apply in NSW

Replacing a switchboard is notifiable electrical work. Two things follow from that automatically.

First, the new board is wired to AS/NZS 3000, the wiring rules every licensed electrician in the country works to. On a switchboard, that is where the safety switch (RCD) requirement bites: the circuits feeding your power points, lights and most fixed appliances need that protection.

Second, a certificate of compliance is lodged with NSW Fair Trading once we finish, and yours arrives by email.

Hang onto it. That is the piece of paper a buyer's inspector or your insurer will want to see one day.

DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, and a live board is the worst place anyone could pick to test that.

How We Work Through a Switchboard Upgrade Job

Most switchboard upgrades run to a single day. On a cottage where nobody ever labelled the circuits, add a couple of hours at the front for working out what feeds what.

  1. We map the board first. We identify every existing circuit and what it runs, then check that the incoming supply is up to what you are about to put behind it. The quote is built on that.

  2. You get a fixed written price. The price we quote is the price you pay. If the board hides something genuinely unforeseen, we stop, show you, and re-quote before going any further.

  3. Power off, old board out, new board in. The supply comes off for the changeover, the RCBOs go in, and each circuit is landed and named as it comes back on.

  4. Tested, certified, handed over. Every circuit is tested before we sign off. Your certificate of compliance goes in, and a copy reaches you with photos of the finished board.

Why This Is a Job for Our Team

A switchboard is the one part of a house where a bad decision stays hidden for years and then surfaces at the worst possible moment.

So we do it slowly at the front and quickly at the back. Our workmanship carries a lifetime workmanship guarantee, which is easy to offer when the circuits were identified properly before anything was cut.

And if a board is tripping and you cannot get the power back on, you are not waiting a week for a slot. Bookings often land same or next day.

Switchboard Upgrades Across Malabar and Surrounding Areas

New boards travel with other work. A partial rewire in a renovated cottage is residential electrical work, and mains that need sorting have to happen before the board can even be sized.

We take switchboard work across Malabar and the surrounding Randwick area, including Maroubra, Matraville and Kingsford.

Common questions

Switchboard Upgrades FAQs

The questions that come up on most switchboard quotes, put the way we would put them with the cover off. If yours is not here, ask us on site.

How is a switchboard upgrade covered if something fails later?

Our workmanship carries a lifetime workmanship guarantee, and if it ever lets you down we come back and fix it at no cost. The switchgear itself gets a 12-month product warranty on top of the manufacturer's.

Will a switchboard upgrade still work with really old wiring?

Yes, though a new board will start telling you the truth about the old wiring. RCBOs trip on faults that ceramic fuses tolerated for years, so we test every circuit during the changeover and show you anything perished before you find it yourself.

What do you need from me on the day?

Clear access to the board and somewhere to park. Beyond that, tell us which circuits matter most to you, because the power is off for part of the day and we can sequence the work around a home office or a full freezer.

What brands do you install for switchboard upgrades?

Clipsal and Hager switchgear, not cheap imports. On a board, the breakers are the part that has to work perfectly on the worst day of their life, so that is not where we save you money.

Do you supply the materials or can I buy my own?

We supply the board and the switchgear as part of the quote, which is how we can stand behind the whole job. If gear is already sitting in your garage, mention it when we quote and we will work through it on site.

What are the signs I need switchboard upgrades?

Rewireable ceramic fuses, no safety switch (RCD), a board with no spare ways left, or nuisance tripping under normal household load. Heat, noise or scorch marks on the enclosure change the answer: that one is urgent, not a booking.
